Dynamic lighting for Game Engines
Light your pixel art
A normal map tells the engine which way each pixel faces. Sprite Normals builds it from your sprite's silhouette and painted shading, at the sprite's own resolution, so moving lights shade it as if it had volume.

Sprites and sheets
Each sprite of a sheet gets its own normals, as long as the sprites don't touch.
Animations
GIF and APNG animations come back as a normal map sprite sheet, with a matching color sheet.
Pixel-perfect
Normal maps keep your sprite's size and transparency, ready for Godot, Unity, and more.
Low-poly and stylized 3D
Normal maps for 3D textures
Sprite Normals works on textures too. Turn on Tileable texture for textures that repeat, like bricks or cobblestones, and the normal map wraps without seams.

What is Sprite Normals?
Sprite Fusion Sprite Normals is a free normal map generator for pixel art. It turns sprites, animations, and textures into normal maps, so they react to dynamic lighting in your game engine.
What is a normal map?
A normal map records which way each pixel faces. Game engines such as Godot and Unity use it to light a flat sprite or texture as if it had volume, so moving lights cast highlights and shading across it.
How to make a normal map?
Drop your images on this page, or click the upload area. The normal maps are generated in your browser, and you can download them as PNG. Your images are never uploaded.
Does it work with animations and sprite sheets?
Yes. GIF and APNG animations come back as a normal map sprite sheet, with a matching color sheet you can download too. In a PNG sprite sheet, each sprite gets its own normals as long as the sprites don't touch.
Can I use it for 3D textures?
Yes! Turn on Tileable texture for textures that repeat, like bricks, planks, or grass: the normal map wraps without seams. It works for pixel art textures on low-poly models as well as stylized, hand-painted textures.
What do Strength, Detail, and Volume do?
Strength sets how deep the relief looks. Detail sets how much of the painted shading becomes relief. Volume rounds the sprite from its silhouette: lower it for flat objects, and it's off for tileable textures.
Which game engines does it work with?
Any engine with normal-mapped lighting. Choose OpenGL for Godot, Unity, and Blender, or DirectX for Unreal Engine. Import normal maps without sRGB, compression, or filtering. See how to use them in Godot and Unity.
Is Sprite Normals free and open source?
Yes, it's free for hobby and commercial projects, and the generator is open source on GitHub. You can also run it as a CLI or a WebAssembly library in your own pipeline.
Can I use it from the API or an AI agent?
Yes. The Sprite Fusion API has a normal maps endpoint, and the MCP server has a create_normal_map tool for Claude, Codex, and other agents. Both are free with a Sprite Fusion account.
Can I generate normal maps in the Pixel Art Generator?
Yes. In the Pixel Art Generator, right-click a sprite with the Hand tool and choose Generate normals, or click Normal map in its info panel.
