Generate Normal Maps
Generate free normal maps for dynamic 2D lighting in Godot, Unity, and other engines.
A normal map tells a game engine which way each pixel faces, so moving lights can shade a flat sprite as if it had volume. Normal maps are free with a Sprite Fusion account.

1. Generate the normal map
Select a sprite or an animation in the Pixel Art Generator. Then right-click the canvas with the Hand tool and choose Generate normals, or click Normal map in its info panel.
The PNG downloads at the sprite's size, with its transparency. An animation gets a sprite sheet with the same frames. Normal maps aren't added to your asset history.
2. Use it in your engine
Normal maps use the OpenGL convention that Godot and Unity expect. Import them without sRGB, compression, or filtering.
- Godot: put the sprite and its normal map in a
CanvasTexture, assign it to yourSprite2D, and add aPointLight2D. - Unity (URP 2D): add the normal map to the sprite as a secondary texture named
_NormalMap, and set your 2D lights' normal map quality to Fast or Accurate.
For the DirectX convention or another strength, use the API or the create_normal_map MCP tool.
