What are pixel art VFX?
VFX, or visual effects, are the explosions, hits, spells, fire and weather that make a game feel alive. Pixel art VFX are drawn on the same pixel grid as your sprites, with limited palettes and dithering instead of blur, so they fit a pixel art game instead of looking pasted on.
Which pixel art effects are included?
25 effects so far: explosion, bullet impacts and ricochets, slash, muzzle flash, blood, dash and blink, fire, lightning, ice, poison, energy orbs and beams, shield, black hole, holy light, heal and mana, power-up, pickups, sparkle, rain, snow, fog, embers, fireflies, falling leaves and bubbles. The library is actively updated, with new effects added all the time.
Are these pixel art effects free for commercial use?
Yes. They're open source under the MIT license: use them in free and commercial games, and change them as much as you want.
How is this different from a pixel art effects pack?
An effects pack gives you sprite sheets: fixed frames at one size, in one palette. Here each effect is source code that draws its pixels and particles while your game runs, so options like size, colors and timing change it. The same file makes a small blast or a big one, and your AI agent can tune it to your game.
Can I get them as sprite sheets?
They come as code, not images. If your engine needs a sprite sheet, ask your AI agent to play the effect and save its frames as one.
Do they work in Unity, Godot or GameMaker?
Each effect is one TypeScript file with no dependencies: it works in any JavaScript or TypeScript game, drawn on a canvas or a texture. For Unity, Godot, GameMaker or another engine, your AI agent ports the file to its language, or rebuilds the effect from its recipe.
How do I use them with Claude, Codex or another AI agent?
Connect the Sprite Fusion MCP server, then ask for what your game needs, like snowfall on your mountain levels. Your agent finds the right effect, reads its recipe and source code, and implements it in your game. You can also download an effect's ZIP and give the file to your agent. See the MCP docs.
Can I make new effects from these?
Yes, they're made for it. Ask your AI agent to start from the closest effect, like a fireball from the energy bolt or acid rain from the rain. Each effect's recipe tells it which timings, layers and colors make it look right.
